Carmina Burana, Carl Orff's primal 1936 cantata for orchestra and chorus, will thrill you to the core. Based on medieval poems, it begins and ends with the dramatic O Fortuna song that cries out against Fortuna, the fickle Roman goddess of fate ... a song used in countless movies and TV commercials. In between are songs with gorgeous melodies and hypnotic rhythms that tell of the pleasures and perils of drinking, gluttony, gambling, and love, as Fortuna spins her fateful wheel. We will introduce Carmina Burana with the 1994 Overture for the End of a Century, by Grammy Award-winning composer Libby Larsen.
