North Central College students enrolled in this program travel to the medieval city of Canterbury, where they study in the shadows of its famous cathedral. The campus of Canterbury Christ Church University (CCCU) is built on what was the old orchard ground of St. Augustine’s Abbey, surrounded by the medieval Abbey wall and now listed as a World Heritage Site dating back to 597 AD. The university offers a wide range of courses to more than 17,000 full-time students and is a five-minute walk from downtown Canterbury, one of the best-known cities in Britain. The campus is 55 minutes by train to London and a mere 20 miles to Dover on the English Channel.
Students enrolled in this program learn alongside British students, taking courses in the arts and humanities, business and the social sciences. In addition to elective courses taken in these areas, there is one required class designed specifically around academic field trips to local sites, London, the southeast of England and Europe. Trips vary each year but usually include the Tower of London and the Globe Theatre, Windsor Castle, Dover Castle and Belgium.
£500 scholarships through BUTEX, a U.K. higher education membership organization, are available for students in all NCC England programs.
Sophomore, junior or senior standing; GPA 3.0 preferred.
Students earn 12 credits towards their degree. Students wanting to earn 15 credits by taking 4 elective courses abroad may pay the additional cost of the course. In addition, students are required to complete GLS 277 in the spring term prior to studying abroad in the fall. All grades earned abroad affect your North Central College GPA when transferred back. You cannot take courses pass/fail.
Required: GLS 277 Seminar: Study Abroad (0.00-2.00 credits)
A workshop in intercultural learning designed for students enrolled in North Central College study abroad programs. In this pre-departure course, students explore the concept of culture, compare cultural values, investigate social relations and communication styles, prepare for adjustment, and begin to develop intercultural competence. Journals are kept while students are in their host cultures; required activities and a final reflective essay are completed upon return. This course begins the spring term before departure.
Required: GLS 367: Modern Britain (3.0 credits)
This course, titled Sites and Sights: Exploring Britain's History and Culture, is required of all participants in the program and is designed to provide an overview of contemporary British culture.
Electives: Students choose three additional courses at 3.0 credits each for a total of 9.0 credits.
Note: Students must have courses pre-approved by North Central College prior to taking them abroad. If students change their course schedules while abroad, they must get this change approved. Some departments only permit students to take a certain number of courses that count toward their major abroad. To ensure that all courses count towards their degrees, students must get their department's approval.
