Spanish is a global language spoken in 21 countries across the world, each with its own cultural identity that makes study of the language so intriguing. North Central's Spanish program blends rigorous language instruction with the exploration of these expressive cultures to give students not only a skill but an enriching educational experience.

Along with classroom exploration, Spanish faculty foster a vibrant environment to celebrate Spanish culture and customs through clubs and programs. Active student clubs such as Raza Unida and Fusión Española ensure a steady presence of Hispanic and Latino heritage programming on campus.

Our study abroad opportunities offer students the chance to study Spanish while experiencing a culture first-hand. The Costa Rica fall term allows you to perfect your Spanish while earning internship credit in the semi-tropics. Study at Pablo Olavide University in Seville lets you pursue rich course offerings at a respected university in southern Spain.

Our proximity to Chicago, with the nation's third-largest Spanish speaking population, provides real advantages. Students benefit from internships, service opportunities, community involvement, museums, cultural institutions and restaurants where they interact with the community and put their language skills into practice.

In short, the Spanish program at North Central College gives students the skills to be fluent speakers, the intellectual tools to be prepared professionals and the personal enrichment to be global citizens.

The Spanish major consists of a minimum of 36 credit hours, at or above the 201-level, which must include the following:

    Examines the concept of environmental justice through interdisciplinary lenses. Beginning by examining different definitions of "environmental justice," various frameworks are used to analyze environmental issues through the lens of social justice and human inequality. Through selected case studies, the course examines a number of topics and questions, which include the advantages and drawbacks of current systems of production and consumption, who bears the burdens and who enjoys the benefits of our current environmental and social system and what kinds of alternatives are available.

    Examination of global issues facing 20th century women in science. Current literature will be used to explore how socioeconomic and cultural differences impact retention of women in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) fields. Discussion topics will include the driving forces behind women's perception of their lack of ability in these disciplines, gender biases facing women, and current trends in science education of girls and women. Emphasis is placed on what advances for women in STEM disciplines have occurred over the last century, and what disparities still need to be resolved.

    An examination of major political, social and economic developments in the United States since the end of World War II to understand today's America. Early topics include the Cold War and American prosperity, Civil Rights movements by African Americans and others, and the Vietnam War. Later topics include the collapse of the New Deal coalition, conservative responses to social upheaval, the shift from an industrial economy to a service economy and America's role in the world since the Cold War's end.     World leaders must navigate an array of domestic and international issues on a daily basis. Their leadership qualities and styles often reflect cultural and social norms as well as their nation's political system. The underlying theme of this course is that the skills and behaviors that are perceived as effective leadership characteristics in one culture are not necessarily those that will be effective in a different culture. Students will explore the ways in which specific characteristics are valued differently by different cultures. Students will also acquire frameworks for assessing how to approach a work assignment in a culture that is not their own. Finally, students will consider the effect of globalization on leadership, and define the characteristics necessary to successfully lead in a highly diverse and complex world that challenges them to understand and respond to nationalism, terrorism, trade, human rights, environmental challenges, power and justice, and explore regional leadership issues.

We will use numerous case studies to explore the key conceptual and theoretical areas and questions within the field. An inquiry into how Latin American authors explore cultural, historical and personal identities through fiction. En el campus:

You can use your Spanish on campus in real-life situations with the community or in social clubs. Fusión Española hosts Spanish-focused events such as Flamenco Month, theatre performances, dance classes, language tables and film events on campus and provides opportunities to explore Hispanic and Latino cultural venues in Chicago and the suburbs.

Raza Unida is the club geared toward raising awareness and celebration of Latino and Chicano themes while advocating diversity and academic excellence on campus and in society.

Sigma Delta Pi is the National Hispanic Honors Society in which high academic achievement among students in the Spanish Program is recognized by inviting students to be inducted and honored on the national level. International Club, Students in Free Enterprise, and many service opportunities also help to put students in contact with the Spanish-speaking world.

En la ciudad de Chicago:

Many Spanish courses include educational excursions to Chicago.  Professors often take students to the city to further examine cultural and social topics discussed in class.  Students explore key questions through professor-led trips to the Cervantes Institute, the Art Institute of Chicago, the National Museum of Mexican Art, the Gene Siskel Film Center, and the Chicago Cultural Center.  Events such as film screenings, conference talks, and author visits engage students in dialogue on contemporary issues.  Students also have opportunities to discover a variety of restaurants that offer traditional and avant-garde cuisine from Spain, Mexico, Colombia, Uruguay, Chile, and Peru.  These unique experiences provide students with a deeper understanding and appreciation of literature, art, music, dance, food, language, society, and politics in Spain and Latin America.

En el extranjero:

Fall and winter/spring long term study abroad opportunities in Seville and Granada (Spain) and Costa Rica and Peru (Latin America) enrich and enhance cultural and linguistic proficiency.  Spanish program students may also take advantage of the two week winter December term course offerings to travel to Ibero-American destinations to earn three academic credits in these accelerated courses.
