Chinese Teacher Training 2019

Chinese Teacher Training Program at North Central College: The Blended Model
(June 14-June 29, 2019)

The North Central College STARTALK Teacher Program, “Integrating Authentic Materials, Effective Teaching Strategies and Technology,” will provide professional development opportunities for 12 pre-service, novice, and continuing K-16 teachers of Mandarin. This training program combines online and face-to-face workshops conducted by nationally known teacher trainers, experienced high school teachers and college professors.

This program is focused on equipping participants with strategies and tools for selecting and applying authentic materials in Chinese language classrooms, is delivered through a combination of face-to-face and online formats. The program, with a total instructional time of more than 90 hours, combines a 10-day face-to-face workshop and two online modules to guide participants through using authentic materials and applying effective teaching strategies in unit and lesson planning. To ensure continued support of participants’ application of the training content, two post-program reunion and sharing activities will happen during the fall and winter. The expected outcomes are that participants will be able to select age-appropriate authentic materials for their lessons, scaffold student learning through effective teaching strategies and tools and develop performance-based assessment using authentic materials. We also hope this year’s teacher program encourages current and future language teachers to venture into adapting STARTALK principles to achieve robust classroom dynamics.

Program Highlights

  • The program will equip Chinese teachers with strategies and hands-on activities that will reflect the STARTALK-endorsed Principles for Effective Teaching and Learning.

  • The training will allow participants to focus on the key issues in selecting and using authentic materials, and work with experts to create and receive feedback on their own lesson plans.

  • All participants will receive a stipend of $100 and a certificate for 90 professional development hours upon successful completion of the program.

  • You will network, collaborate, and be in contact with like-minded colleagues.
