Program Overview

Fall Semester/Spring Semester/Full-Year/Summer (S.I.R.O.L.) intensive Chinese language and culture study only

Eligible students must be at junior or senior standing; some college-level Chinese is recommended.

Taichung, located close to scenic destinations in Taiwan’s central mountain range, is Taiwan’s third largest city and a center for the arts, cultural activities and cutting-edge industries. Established in 1955, Tunghai University has been recognized as the leading private university in Taiwan and now has nine colleges and a total student population of 17,000. Thirty-four departments and the Chinese Language Center offer small classes and many opportunities to explore Chinese culture. A range of courses, including intensive Mandarin Chinese is available, and over 100 courses, including some in fine arts and creative design, are offered in English. The newly established International College offers English-immersion programs with courses in international business administration, sustainability science and engineering.

Academics

Students are required to complete GLS 277 in the spring term prior to studying abroad in the fall.

Students earn 12-15 credits, depending on course load and length of stay. All grades earned abroad affect students North Central College GPA when transferred back. Students cannot take courses pass/fail.

Note:  Students must have courses pre-approved by North Central College prior to taking them abroad. If students change their course schedules while abroad, they must get this change approved. Some departments only permit students to take a certain number of courses that count toward their major abroad; by getting all courses pre-approved, this ensures that these courses will count towards their degrees.

Housing and Meals

North Central College students live in nearby apartments or residence halls on the Tunghai campus. Each room is shared among four students, and each student is provided with a bed, desk, chair, closet, and bookshelf.  There are shared shower rooms and toilets, as well as convenient laundry rooms available for use.  Students can watch TV in the common areas/lounges. Internet lines are available in every room.

Meals:  Meals are not included in program fees. Students have a variety of places to eat on-campus including cafeterias in both the men and women's dormitories, as well as a cafeteria located in the Student Activities Center. There is also a coffee shop and a convenience store on campus, as well as a supermarket for students to purchase their own groceries. There is a regular bus service from the university's main gates to the downtown Taichung train station.

Estimated Costs

Students pay North Central College tuition and room and board to the host institution. A $30 non-refundable application fee is due at the time of application submission. Students are personally responsible for paying airfare, health insurance, departure tax, books, extra personal travel and spending money, as these items are not included in room and board fees. North Central College financial aid does apply.
